Madrid, 26 December 2022.
In Euromoney's annual Market Leaders rankings, Santander was named as Market Leader in Spain in the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), Corporate Banking and Investment Banking categories.
The bank was also ranked as Highly Regarded in the Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) and Digital Solutions categories, while Openbank received the same recognition in the latter category.
The Euromoney Market Leaders rankings use multiple data sources – with both qualitative and quantitative data, and internal bank data and external customer data – to build a robust and objective picture of the leaders in each sector. Euromoney's team of analysts creates rankings by category and country to create an index of leading banks.
A key part of achieving first place in the ESG criteria category was Santander's commitment to building a more sustainable bank by incorporating such criteria into its strategic priorities. In terms of environmental matters, the climate strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 is particularly noteworthy, as is the bank's support for customers in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and the reduction of the carbon footprint of its internal operations.
With respect to social issues, Santander fosters a workplace that attracts and retains diverse talent, promotes financial inclusion and empowerment, and supports communities where it operates. In relation to good governance, the bank promotes its corporate culture (The Santander Way), ensures good corporate governance and appropriate risk management, and acts responsibly with respect to customers and suppliers.
A fundamental part of Santander taking top place in the Corporate Banking and Investment Banking categories was its position as Spain's leading bank for leveraged finance, capital markets, syndicated loans and export finance. In this regard, the bank's leading position in terms of finance for renewable energies is also notable, as is the steady growth of the Corporate Banking and Investment Banking divisions over recent years thanks to a customer-focused business strategy.
