Mexico City, 1 June 2020 -
As part of its commitment to the community, Santander Mexico has begun donating 21,000 hot meals to employees of the National Institute of Health Sciences and Nutrition "Salvador Zubirán".

Through a partnership with Fundación Gigante, Santander Mexico will feed medical and nursing staff, stretcher carriers, administrative and general services staff of this institute for a month, making sure they get a healthy and hot meal at work.

"As a responsible bank, we are involved in a variety of initiatives to help the community in the current situation. We've kept our banking services running across the country, taking measures at branches to protect customers and personnel, and we're donating resources in partnership with other companies to protect our heroes in scrubs. This support is our way of thanking staff at this institute and we would like to do the same for other hospitals" said Marcela Espinosa Macias, head of Sustainability at Santander Mexico.

Through this partnership with Fundación Gigante, the meals delivered to the medical staff are prepared at Toks, Presidente and Panda Express restaurants under strict hygiene measures. They are taken to the hospital using special units with integrated kitchens to keep the food warm and served at the right time in special packaging with disposable cutlery so that these employees can eat a balanced meal. The meals are approved by the medical institution itself. Each delivery comes with a letter from Santander thanking the health workers for taking care of us.

Since March, Santander Mexico has implemented more than ten initiatives, such as Responsible Banking for COVID-19 in Mexico. Through these, it has helped more than 500,000 customers by giving them payment holidays on loans, mortgages and credit cards, and offering the highest discount ever on car insurance. It created a fund with other companies to quadruple donations through ATMs with a goal of helping medical and nursing staff by contributing 70,000 PPEs. It has implemented protective measures for customers and employees at all branches and offices, including hand sanitiser, sanitisation, protective face shields and masks, and implemented social distancing and work from home measures. It has also launched three schemes with over 10,000 scholarships and grants for innovative ideas to overcome the impact of COVID-19, and given the federal government and Mexico City an app to help detect cases and provide information to the community. It also launched the "Overcome Together" website to provide information and resources for dealing with the pandemic from home.

As a group, Santander will be allocating EUR 100 million (approximately MXN 2.7 million) worldwide for solidarity initiatives to combat the coronavirus.
