State loan guarantees or direct grants for companies?
José Luis Martínez Campuzano, spokesman for the Spanish Banking Association, published this article last April 30th, 2020 in the newspaper EL MUNDO. It highlights, among others, the following aspects:
- State guarantees are necessary: “Companies of all sizes need liquidity and financing now. For this purpose, State guarantees are essential. Otherwise, many companies would not obtain financing under traditional risk analysis patterns”.
- However, it is necessary to offer companies other alternatives besides financing: “it is crucial that the authorities assess other kinds of solutions for those who cannot access to this lines, such as subsidies or public grants aimed at covering the losses that many companies are experiencing or will experience in the future as a result of this crisis”
- Granting credits in a professional manner is necessary to avoid future losses to banks, but especially to the State and taxpayers: “The role of banks is essential to channel funds to the business community. But they must always do it in a responsible and prudent way, a rule shared and demanded by the authorities always, before and after covid-19 showed up”
