The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the roadmap for building a sustainable and inclusive future. Here we tell you what they are, why they matter so much to people and businesses, and how Santander is contributing to them.

In 2015, the UN released its Agenda 2030. It’s an action plan in the interest of people, the planet and prosperity that UN Member States approved unanimously. The Agenda 2030 set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDS) to address economic, social and environmental issues. The SDGs are a universal undertaking to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all people by 2030.

They address the global challenges we face every day. Some objectives are eradicating poverty; food security; healthy living and quality education; gender equality; access to water and clean energy; sustainable economic growth; urgent action against climate change; peace and prosperity; and easy access to justice. The image below shows the 17 SDGs to transform our world. You can also check them out on the UN website

The SDGs have 169 global targets monitored against 231 indicators. The UN considers development “sustainable” if it meets current needs without jeopardizing future generations. Since the SDGs were adopted in 2015, progress has been made. But “the aspirations set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are in jeopardy”, according to The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022, which the UN publishes every year with data from over 200 countries and regions.

Santander's business contributes directly to the Agenda 2030. We have a firm commitment towards the Sustainable Development Goals. We joined some 125 banks in creating, signing and developing the Principles for Responsible Banking as part of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).  The SDGs can only be achieved if governments, companies and broader society work together.

Our commitment is more recognized by the day. Santander has been praised by several organizations and featured on prestigious rankings, like the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Euromoney and Bloomberg’s Gender Equality Index. The Responsible banking chapter in our 2022 Annual Report sets out the SDGs where our business, commitment and strategy can make a big difference.
